Industries We Serve

American Machine & Gear has been in business for almost 70 years. We serve a wide variety of customers. Some customers are major industrial plants, like steel mills, pulp and paper mills, aluminum plants and titanium and zirconium producers. Others are manufacturers of industrial equipment such as aircraft engine parts, over the road trucks, portable machine tools, food processing equipment, wood processing machinery, agricultural processing equipment, industrial pumps, lift truck equipment, concrete products manufacturing equipment, castings for heavy equipment and tire shredders. Some other customers repair equipment used in the pulp and paper industry, including our affiliated company, North American Mechanical Services.

Other customers that we help include bakeries, breweries, farmers with broken equipment, boat manufacturers, a wood pellet stove equipment manufacturer, a naval base, the electric company and the water bureau. Some equipment manufacturers subcontract to us a few steps in their manufacturing that they do not handle internally. We also help other machine shops with jobs that are too big for them or have requirements that the other shop can’t handle themselves.

Many of our customers come to us for replacement parts, particularly when the manufacturer of the equipment is out of business, has a long lead time and/or wants a very high price for a heritage part. We frequently work from broken parts, sketches, CAD files or hand drawn prints from as much as 100 years ago. Whatever it takes to get you back running again. We frequently are working ‘round the clock for a customer that is broken down and they may be losing thousands or even millions of dollars an hour as a result.

Some customers send us machinery to repair, particularly gearboxes. They don’t know what’s wrong, just that it’s making a funny sound or, maybe, it simply isn’t running anymore. Sometimes, we’re just replacing bearings and seals. Sometimes there are broken gears inside that have to be replaced as well. We also repair worn construction equipment for large contractors, such as buckets. We want your machinery to come back to you, looking as clean and running as fine as it did the day you bought it.

Other customers need us to do just one step in the manufacturing of a part, whether that is a one off replacement part or your OEM parts, used in making your product. Not everyone has the equipment and skills to do everything that is required. For example, some customers just need teeth cut on a gear or leadscrew, which they have already machined to size. Our wire electro discharge machine (EDM) cuts internal shapes, like keyways or teeth, to amazingly tight tolerances in parts that are already very hard. We have just added a CNC lapping machine, which can produce parts that are flat and parallel, within a micron tolerance.
